El Centro/Imperial

The city of El Centro in the county of Imperial is located on the California border just north of Mexico. This bustling border town is responsible for feeding the nation, as Imperial ranks as one of the Top 10 agricultural counties in America. A world apart from the populous cities that are more well-known in California, El Centro’s rural setting offers visitors a chance to escape the concrete-and-glass jungles of metropolitan America and instead immerse themselves in a day of adrenaline-fueled adventure.

Imperial Sand Dunes Recreational Area is the most prominent feature of Imperial County’s off-highway recreational region. Formed by windblown sands from a prehistoric sea, this 40-mile-long dune system has been the backdrop for many major motion pictures throughout the years. Visitors who don’t own personal dune buggies or ATVs are in luck as there are multiple rental companies that can provide everything needed to explore the dunes– some of which reach over 300 feet in elevation! Whether you are riding the dunes or walking the high-traffic retail areas of El Centro, you will notice the many day-tripping visitors from Mexico who regularly commute across the border for a day of shopping and adventure.
